Chigasaki City Museum of Art

Chigasaki City Museum of Art

The Chigasaki Art Museum opened in April 1998 as a place to collect and exhibit works by artists associated with the local area, a place to experience a variety of high-quality art culture, and a place to support the creative and presentation activities of citizens. In the past, the residence of Otojiro Kawakami and Sadayakko Kawakami, the Meiji-era shingeki actors known for their "Okpekepe" song, was built here, and later the industrialist Yasusaburo Hara built a villa.
Today, the area around the museum is a green park that preserves the old landscape of Chigasaki, with beautiful red and white plum blossoms in early spring, making it a place where citizens can relax and enjoy nature throughout the four seasons.
The Chigasaki Art Museum has a collection of approximately 2,000 works by artists associated with Chigasaki, including Tetsugoro Yorozu, who left his mark on the history of modern Western-style painting in Japan, Western-style painter Keizo Koyama, who was awarded the Order of Cultural Merit for his solid painting techniques, watercolorist Itoji Mitsuhashi, who was fascinated by Spain, Koitsu Tsuchiya, who created attractive woodblock prints of landscapes in various parts of Japan, and up-and-coming artists who are currently based in Chigasaki-city.
